Establishment of a Mini Fish Farm
Project Launch: 12-27-19
The women of Ndombo Sandjiry will set up and manage a fish farm at Lake Taouey. Women used to fish in this lake, but in 1988 an anti-salt dam was installed which drastically effected the ecosystem. This resulted in more water, more vegetation, increased health risks, and scarcity of freshwater fish. This impacted food security negatively, as those freshwater fish are a staple in the local diet. Now women trek 100 km to stock up on fish to sell. This project will allow the women to safely fish in the Lake and sell this prefered source of nutrients to the community. This will impact economic stability, health, and food security. There is high demand and community buy-in. Partnerships with goverment, private, and public actors have already been engaged. Community members have already started cleaning the lake and preparing the space.
