Caring Mothers and Healthy Students
Project Launch:
Health workers at the Health Center of Leymebamba, a town on the northeastern end of Peru, recently reported high levels of diarrhea and parasites among their patients because of poor hygiene and sanitation practices. This problem can be attributed to the lack of education and ingrained cultural traditions and beliefs that conflict with improved sanitation and hygiene practices. World Connect is partnering with the Health Center of Leymebamba on leading a series of sanitation and hygiene workshops in area schools, and in constructing new latrines and handwashing stations at 24 of the town's most vulnerable households and at one of the local schools. This project will help mitigate the economic and social cost such as poor school performance and high medical bills, which can result from poor hygiene practices.
